Mum’s horror as son, 6, finds eight-inch machete while playing in bushes
A horrified mum has described the terrifying moment her son found an eight-inch machete while playing in bushes.
Diana Meacock says her six-year-old boy, Ollie, has been left traumatised and is struggling to sleep after discovering the deadly blade near their local shop.
The 25-year-old was out on a playdate with a friend and her child when Ollie made the alarming discovery.
“We were out with one of his friends and we stopped at the shop for a juice and a snack,” she said.
“My son loves playing in the bushes, as most kids do, so that’s where he went.
“A few seconds later I saw him come running out and he looked upset. He was just saying ‘there’s a machete’. I think he got a real fright – he’s only ever seen something like that on his Lego game or on Minecraft before.
“I went up to it and it looked about eight inches. I could see it was a ‘Haku’ machete and there was a black case right next to it.
“Straight away I phoned the police and they asked me to pick it up with some tissue and hand it in to the shop, then they would come and get it.
“I was shaking taking it in there – it was a frightening experience. I wasn’t until I picked it up I realised how heavy it was, and how dangerous it could be. It was shocking.”
The ordeal has now had a lasting impact on Ollie.
Diana said: “We can’t talk about it. He doesn’t want to talk about it now. He didn’t sleep much last night and kept asking if all the doors were locked.
“He doesn’t understand why somebody would want to use something like that. We had to make up a story and tell him it was for a monster catcher to lighten his mood, but he is upset about it.”
The blade is not believed to be linked to any incidents or ongoing investigations, police said.
Police Scotland were called following the discovery on Saturday afternoon, and officers asked for the item to be taken into the store for it to be collected.
It was later removed and destroyed.
